Overview: The Jewel of the Gulf of Oman
Emerging like a string of golden limestone pearls from the deep turquoise expanse of the Gulf of Oman, 18 kilometers off the coast of Barka and 40 minutes by speedboat from Muscat, the Daymaniyat Islands Nature Reserve (Ad Dimaniyat - 23.8564° N, 58.0936° E) is the Middle East’s premier marine sanctuary.
Comprising nine uninhabited limestone islands and sweeping submerged coral archipelagos, Daymaniyat is recognized by UNESCO and protected under Omani royal decree. Bathed by the nutrient-rich Arabian Sea upwellings and sheltered from urban runoff, this marine national park boasts extraordinarily high coral cover and serves as the most important nesting and foraging refuge for critically endangered Hawksbill Sea Turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) and Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas) in the northwestern Indian Ocean.
At iconic snorkel sites like Turtle City and The Aquarium, snorkelers can glide over untouched table coral terraces (Acropora) and massive brain corals (Platygyra) in 2 to 8 meters of crystal-clear water, sharing the sea with 10 to 25 wild sea turtles, docile zebra sharks, honeycomb morays, and seasonal whale sharks.

1. Hawksbill Sea Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) Rookery
Daymaniyat hosts one of the densest nesting populations of Hawksbill turtles in the entire Indo-Pacific region. Every year between February and May, hundreds of female Hawksbills haul out onto the protected white sandy coves of the islands to lay clutches of eggs. In the water, they spend their days cruising the shallow coral plateaus, using narrow beaks to extract toxic marine sponges (Suberites domuncula) and soft colonial tunicates.
2. Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) Population
While Hawksbills dominate the outer coral walls, hundreds of Green turtles forage across the macroalgae-encrusted limestone terraces and sheltered bays of Police Island (Al Ghafa) and Sira.
3. Co-Occurring Megafauna Guild
- Whale Sharks (Rhincodon typus): Between July and October, plankton-rich upwellings attract dozens of migrating whale sharks to the island passes.
- Zebra / Leopard Sharks (Stegostoma tigrinum): Docile bottom-dwellers resting on the sandy patches of Turtle City.
- Arabian Butterflyfish (Chaetodon melapterus) & Blacktip Reef Sharks: Thriving hard coral gardens shelter endemic Arabian reef fish.
